La Ville is Gondry's sixth video for his band Oui Oui. The song is a bit like Lovefool by the Cardigans: sweet and fun, yet creative enough not to be saccharine. The clip is as colorful as the song: bright oranges, blues, greens, and pinks. Pink as in bubblegum, which makes an appearance in the video. Even the band members are stretched like taffy. Says Gondry in RES, "I was influenced by Deee-Lite's great video Groove is in the Heart. I wanted to do a tribute to pop-art - we are wearing afros because people always complained that we have no swing." As for concept, one could subtitle this video "Oui Oui Goes to New York Silly." A huge person falls onto the "world" of New York City, then splits off into the four members of Oui Oui. They dance around, get caught in a street full of bubblegum, and get squashed. Green-screen technology, fish-eye lenses, coloring, models, and animation help create the elasticolor world of La Ville. |
