Jean-Louis Bompoint & others restored the movie. According to Bompoint's website, it was shown at Cannes Film Festival, movie theaters and on television in 1990. He has information about the restoration project here.
However, some people in France did not like the restored version. Bompoint has his side of the "restoration fight."
The result was that L'Atalante was restored again (!) by some other people, and the new version was released in "Jean Vigo - L'Integrale DVD" in 2001.
