Synopsis
Jerry (Jack Black) is a junkyard worker who attempts to sabotage a power plant he suspects of causing his headaches. But he inadvertently causes his brain to become magnetized, leading to the unintentional destruction of the movies in his friend's (Danny Glover) store. In order to keep the store's one loyal customer, an elderly lady with a tenuous grasp on reality, the pair re-create a long line of films including The Lion King, Rush Hour, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, When We Were Kings, Driving Miss Daisy, and Robocop, putting themselves and their townspeople into it. They become the biggest stars in their neighborhood.

From The Hollywood Reporter: "Producer Georges Bermann of Partizan said Gondry, who has partnered with Partizan since 1989, came to him in November [2005] with several ideas. 'Michel is a super-fast writer,' Bermann said. 'He handed in a draft in three weeks. Focus was interested the second they heard the pitch and made the deal within a week.'

One week before production, the film hit a rather sizable bump. In a smallish interview, Michel says, "The rights situation in the world is getting ridiculous. I have to reimagine a quarter of my film one week before I shoot. It's absurd. We are not allowed to shoot graffiti without the permission of the person who drew it, even something like 'f -- you.'" Asked for clarification, Michel told me it was a "true labyrinth to get the rights," adding, "We needed authorization from every director, writer, producer for each movie we are doing."

OFFICIAL SITE FOR BE KIND REWIND

The official site for Be Kind Rewind is now online! On it you will find that Michel has completely erased the Internet, and it's up to us to help rebuild it using a technique called "sweding." "Sweding" is a term coined in the film which explains how Jack Black and Mos Def's new, recreated films have such high rental fees — they're from Sweden.

The new site also has "sweded" trailers of many of the movies recreated in the film, which is released next January in America.

BE KIND RELEASE UPDATE

According to the good ol' IMDB, Be Kind Rewind's American release date has been pushed back from 21 December 2007. The film will now be in theaters on 25 January 2008. Release dates have also popped up for other countries: 27 December for Germany, 8 February 2008 for Iceland, and 14 March for Spain. It's still early in the game, though, so expect some changes to this line-up.

Also, the film's composer Jean Michel Bernard has posted some pictures from the soundtrack recording sessions at his site. Apparently he has been arranging some Fats Waller songs with Mos Def on vocals. (via The Playlist)

ANOTHER BE KIND PIC

Here's part two in the developing series of photos from Be Kind Rewind. This time it's Jack Black and Mos Def dressing up like Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy. (via /film.)

Meanwhile, IMDB has listed new dates for Be Kind's release. In America, it will get a limited release on 21 December, while Australian fans — who had to wait an excruciatingly long time for The Science of Sleep — will see it on 24 January 2008.

BE KIND TEST SCREENING

Ain't It Cool News received a dispatch from someone calling themselves "Plant! Plant!" In it Mr. or Mrs. Plant! reviews a test screening of Be Kind Rewind. There are no huge spoilers in the review, but it is moderately revealing. Snip, via Cinematical:
This is as close to a "studio picture" as he's going to make, but there are no fart jokes here. It's very classy and weird, but mainstream audiences can definetly get into it. Jack Black is pretty standard Jack Black, but Mos Def is great. He and Black's friendship is very fun to watch and is remiscent of the best onscreen duos we've seen in the past. There's a lot of physical comedy, probably inspired by the old time Laurel & Hardy type shorts from the 30's.

JB REVEALS MORE REWOUND FILMS

--WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD--
In a new interview, Jack Black talks about some of the films that have been remade in Be Kind Rewind. Snip:
"We did a lot of movies; we did 'When We Were Kings,' the documentary about Mohammad Ali - I play Mohammad Ali, strangely. We did 'Superman' - actually, I shouldn't say that, we had to change the name to something else, 'Incredible Flying Man' I think we changed it to. We did 'Ghostbusters' - that was a masterpiece; we did 'RoboCop,' we did 'Driving Miss Daisy' just to name a few.

"'Ghostbusters' was pretty fun; that one we really went into. We did a little 'King Kong,' too; it was cool. And it was pretty low-budget, the movie; but [Michel] makes up for it with incredible tricks and stuff, and depth perception, and camera tricks.

"He is a very spontaneous director and super creative on every level. He designed and made these home-made props and costumes himself that were unbelievable. And I guess a lot of the time, felt like no one knew what was going on except for him, and by design I think he likes to create a bit of chaos on the set, and then at the last minute focus it and yell out loud to people, 'You do thisŠrah, rah, rah.' And then there's a crazy activity, and everyone's running around, and it creates a really amazing energy; it was really fun."

MICHEL MAKES NYMAG'S DAY

Michel apparently made New York Magazine's Mr. Intelligencer's day, by dispatching an e-mail towards him about Be Kind Rewind. He talks about some of the film's plot: SPOILER WARNING!
The store clerks have to construct period flat cars with historical re-creation, transform a washing machine into a space ship for the space odyssey, capture a wild cat with garland beam guns in a fridge for Ghostbusters, etc. They are assisted in these recreations by the locales of the neighborhood.

To find realistic people from the neighborhood, we had the idea to turn to the real Passaic inhabitants. Nice people, going with their life that has not much to do with the film industry which makes them special in my eyes. That seems an obvious and easy idea. Well, it's not. Let me explain why: the film industry is extremely protected by numerous circles and organizations whose only goal is make sure you won't employ anyone out of those circles. In short, this makes it next to impossible to put a fresh face/voice in front of the camera and without a pre-conceived idea how to act. This pre-conceived idea ruins what I am trying to capture on film.

To be authorized those non professional actors; we created a small dance club in the town. We needed a series of dance numbers for the historical re-creation mentioned above. We asked in the street anyone who would be interested by this activity and for one month we gathered twice a week in a Passaic ballroom (used as well as a location). We were 50 people and small groups formed naturally led by anyone will to take the leader role. Rapid progress were made and a lot of great personalities merged from the process, that we could include as characters in the movie.

BEHIND BE KIND PT. 2

There have been updates to the various Be Kind blogs I mentioned previously.

Apparently Aaron Stewart-Ahn was shooting footage for the DVD, he mentions here. Jake, the favored PA, talks about the final days and wrap party in his latest post. And the somewhat anonymous gaffer posts about helicopter shots and how Michel made 3D photos during the shoot and gave Be Kind Viewmasters to the crew. Plus I found an earlier post of the gaffer's that has several pics from the shoot.

PASSAIC PICK-ME-UP

Going beyond his trademark humanism into straight-up egalitarianism, Michel, plus the cast and crew of Be Kind Rewind, is featured in a New York Times article highlighting the production's energizing effect on Passaic's townspeople. Says Gondry, "In New York, some people are fed up with shooting, and have attitude. Here, we got really great support."

The article has some interesting notes: More than 300 residents were used as extras, "dozens" with speaking roles. And we finally learn the name of the mechanic who created the cars in Pecan Pie and The Denial Twist: Irv Gooch. His junkyard The junkyard he works at, A+ Automotive, was the site of the film's inspiration.

BEHIND BE KIND

Principal photography on one of my most anticipated films ever ends this Thursday, 26 October. I've gathered some interesting tidbits about production from across this vast ocean of information we call the Internet, and will now present you with the finest of the fine:

On 29 September New Jersey's Herald News printed this article on Gondry + co's excursion onto the mean streets of Passaic, New Jersey, where Jack Black entertained kids and film crew alike, and a girl wondered aloud, "It's kind of weird. First I hear is Jack Black is in Passaic. Why Passaic?"

Meanwhile, one of Jack Black's biggest fans got to meet him on set and has a bunch of pictures to prove it.

And into the blogosphere we go! I've discovered that new director Aaron Stewart-Ahn (The Decemberists, The Album Leaf) is shooting - what is it, Aaron, documentary footage? - of the film. He speaks (sleepily) about this at his Giant Robot blog.

A Be Kind gaffer has posted a quick pic of Danny Glover and Sigourney Weaver at the end of the day. She, we discover, plays a high-powered Hollywood lawyer trying to shut the characters' production down.

An apparently favored, young PA posted a lengthy, and entertaining, personal experience of his few days working on Rewind. In it he claims the budget was $30m, but I'd be wary of that mark until we get information from a more solid source.

Finally, back overseas, Michel and Partizan founder/Gondry producer Georges Bermann were on CanalPlus' "L'Hebdo Cinéma" very recently. Anybody have an online video from that? I can't find one. (Thanks Hugo, Fred Leray!)

Were you in Passaic to see a bit of Be Kind being filmed? Post your thoughts in the comments! (Nothing plot-revealing!)

MICHEL TALKS TO COMINGSOON

As Michel and company head into production in a couple of weeks on Be Kind Rewind, Michel took some time to talk about the film a little bit (spoiler alert!) to Coming Soon.net.

He also talks about Master of Space and Time. (Thanks, noise64!)
