Le Passage is a simple, eye-catching commercial, and Gondry's first of
two for Air France. With the line "Faire du ciel le plus bel; endroit de
la terre / To make the most beautiful sky; stay grounded" (rough translation),
Gondry floats a jet over Hope Sandoval's cirrus-like voice. For five scenes
the camera drifts along as gently as the plane. A father clears
his rear window, a woman does her makeup, another woman meditates, and
an Air France jet glides in perfect symbiosis. The final scene
adds a cute touch: Someone lifts the needle off of the Sandoval record,
but the Air France jet sails across and lands — from our perspective — onto the record, continuing the music.
